Petitgrain

  • The word Petitgrain means little grain in French

  • At E17Aromatherapy, I love oils that bring gentle balance — and Petitgrain is one of the finest. Distilled from the leaves and young twigs of the bitter orange tree (Citrus aurantium), this beautifully fresh, green-citrus oil has been treasured for centuries for its calming yet uplifting qualities.

    A Little History

    The name petitgrain, meaning “little grain” in French, dates back to the 18th century when the oil was first produced from the small, unripe oranges of the tree. As distillation methods evolved, producers discovered the leaves and twigs yielded an equally exquisite aroma, and today the oil is steam-distilled from the tree’s foliage.

    The bitter orange tree is unique in that it gives us three distinct essential oils — neroli from the blossoms, sweet orange from the peel, and petitgrain from the leaves — each with its own personality. Petitgrain became especially valued in traditional European perfumery and classic cologne blends for its crisp, clean character.
